"A-MAZE-ING" STORIES

The Electric Maze® is one of Interel's most widely used and popular devices, providing a powerful learning experience. Here are some "a-maze-ing" stories shared by a few of our clients.

"Ode to the Maze!" by David Gouthro, President, The Consulting Edge

It was the spring of 1987 when I was first exposed to the magic of the Electric Maze. I was attending a workshop at the Pecos River Learning Center located outside Santa Fe, New Mexico in the Pecos wilderness. The moment I saw it and experienced it, I sensed incredible potential. My primary work is as a facilitator and trainer, working primarily with senior executives in private, public and not-for-profit corporations on four continents. What I loved about the Maze, was the rich metaphors it provided for meaningful debriefing and transfer of learning into a variety of corporate settings. Read more ›

"Rocky's Story" by Richard Kimball, President and Co-Founder of the FRED FORUM

It was the late 1980's when I got my first glimpse of the Electric Maze and it was 'love at first sight.' A number of things attracted me: the maze was understated, yet elegant with its black and grey color. The maze was provocative and mysterious with its programmable control module; and most of all I could tell that the maze was very ingenious and with it, I could communicate complex concepts to others, if it only could be mine. "My A-maze-n' Journey" by Alonzo Johnson, Ph.D.

I was first introduced to the Electric Maze in 1994 while working as Assistant Professor of Quality Systems at a community college. I taught academic classes and provided learning and development consulting services to local businesses. My relationship with the Electric Maze preceded the profound business relationship I have now with its inventor. The college owned the first version of the maze (EM1). The maze quickly became my learning tool of choice inside and outside the classroom. I used it as an action learning tool in my group dynamics and leadership classes, and for my team leader facilitator training. Read more ›

"The Amazing Maze" by Bill Faust, Creativity and Human Resource Development Expert

In the late 1980's, I made a career veer from International Finance MBA into a newly born Motorola University as Manager of Executive Education. These were the very early days when you had to drag people kicking and screaming into any classroom where Vision, Creativity or Intuition might be discussed. Read more ›

"John's Story" by John Dicus, Co-founder and Management Consultant, Cornerstone Consulting Associates

I like to use the Electric Maze whenever possible because it has an almost magical ability to both highlight and transform the characteristic behavior of a group of participants. The Maze consists of a 6' x 8' industrial carpet, printed with an array of squares. Each square overlays pressure sensitive switches wired to a control box. The maze is not large, yet when you participate in a group Maze activity, the carpet grid feels significantly larger. And when participants try to find their way across it, the exit end seems a great distance away. Read more ›

"BMW, the Maze, and Me" by Roland Spinola, Trainer & Consultant

It must have been in 1994—I was doing management training for BMW. They had just bought Rover and teambuilding among managers of different nationalities (and therefore different cultures) was high on their priority list. Also, the plant in Spartanburg, USA, began delivering the first vehicles. Read more ›
